Unforgettable Porto

Porto's blend of tradition and modernity, its rich cultural heritage, and the warmth of its people make it an unforgettable destination. The IGLTA Membership Team visited this charming Portuguese city for a strategic planning meeting and found it an inspiring setting for both LGBTQ+ business or leisure travelers.

Begin your adventure with a Tuk Tuk Tour, a photography-friendly way to immerse yourself in Porto’s picturesque streets while taking in iconic landmarks such as the Clérigos Tower, the Cadeia da Relação, and the Ribeira do Porto. To fully experience the essence of this city on the Douro River, don’t rely solely on land-based transportation. Taking a serene tour on the river as the sun dips below the horizon is the perfect way to cap off a day of sightseeing. The breathtaking views of Porto, with the Luís I Bridge and the colorful Ribeira district, are nothing short of magical.

For a special dinner, look no further than Vinum, located in the cellars of Graham’s winery. This exquisite experience is inspired by Portuguese gastronomy and complemented by the finest local wines. The stunning views over the Douro River add to the ambiance. For another excellent dining option further afield, head to the city of Matosinhos in the northern Porto district, known for its fish and seafood. Dining at Valentim, where freshly grilled fish is a highlight, showcases quality in every bite.

In 2020, Porto launched the World of Wine (WOW) cultural district across the Douro River from Porto’s Old Town in the Vila Nova de Gaia neighborhood. Filled with immersive experiences and Insta-worthy spots, it’s eclectic, whimsical, and continues to evolve. Definitely a WOW! Don’t miss the PINK Palace Museum for a dip into the world of rosé wine, which is educational, entertaining and delicious. For more interactive Portuguese lessons, dine at DeCastro Gaia, within the cultural Porto Cruz Space, where the culinary delights are complemented by  exhibitions on the history and production of Port wine, mixology workshops, and a panoramic terrace overlooking the Douro River. For a truly unique hands-on activity, visit the workshop at Boutique dos Relógios to learn the art of watchmaking. Then, enjoy the city’s queer vibes with an evening at Maus Hábitos, a unique space combining music, visual arts, and cuisine that attracts a diverse crowd and includes LGBTQ+ artists and entertainers in its ever-changing lineup.

Whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure, Porto’s charm, inclusivity, and rich cultural experiences promise an unforgettable visit for every traveler.
